Our Team

Phil Gisi Phil Gisi, Owner/Chief Executive Officer,was raised on a farm near New Rockford, N.D., and is a 1982 graduate of the University of North Dakota (UND) with a Bachelor of Science degree in business administration, major in accounting. Gisi first served as the CFO for an oil field service and construction company, then spent 10 years working for St. Joseph’s/UniMed Medical Center in Minot, N.D., where he was the Vice President/CFO and later President/CEO. In 1994, Gisi invested in Edgewood Vista Senior Living, Inc., and today is the owner/CEO. Gisi is also the owner/CEO of Edgewood Management Group, LLC. and the President/CEO of its related development company, Edgewood Development Group, LLC. Gisi is also the President/CEO of Edgewood Real Estate Investment Trust, a company specializing in the ownership of senior housing facilities under the REIT ownership structure. He currently serves as a board member of Altru Hospital in Grand Forks and a member of UND’s Alumni Advisory Council of the College of Business and Public Administration.

Russell G. Kubik Russell G. Kubik, Executive Vice President/Chief Operations Officer,oversees operations at the executive level for Edgewood Management Group. This includes oversight of operations of Edgewood’s Regional Vice Presidents, Directors and the company’s senior living communities. Prior to joining Edgewood, Kubik served as the President of Regal Senior Living, Inc., a healthcare consulting business which provides growth strategies and consultation to upgrade programming or develop ancillary programs in assisted living communities. Originally from Dickinson, N.D., Kubik earned his undergraduate degree in sociology and attended graduate school for sociology/research at the University of North Dakota. With his strong passion for providing the highest quality care for seniors, Kubik began his career as the administrator of Mandan Villa, a 120-skilled-bed nursing facility located in Mandan, N.D. His past roles also include Regional Director of Operations with Beverly Enterprises, overseeing 13 skilled nursing facilities in Washington and Idaho; Regional Director of Operations for Sunrise Healthcare Corporation, overseeing 10 skilled nursing facilities in the Puget Sound region; Vice President of Operations for Emeritus Assisted Living, including general operations, development and growth of 62 senior living communities in 15 states; and Divisional Vice President for Life Care Centers of America, consisting of 32 skilled nursing facilities in Idaho, Oregon and Washington.

Rex Carlson Rex Carlson, Executive Vice President/Chief Financial Officer, is responsible for the organization’s financial strategy and execution. A former tax partner with Eide Bailly, LLP and personal advisor to the shareholders of R.D. Offutt Company, he has spent much of his career advising high-wealth individuals and mid-sized businesses on all aspects of finance, tax, business development and operations. A native North Dakotan, Mr. Carlson holds a bachelor of business administration degree in accounting from the University of North Dakota and a master of business taxation degree from the University of Minnesota Carlson School of Management. He is a certified public accountant and holds licenses
in North Dakota and Minnesota (Inactive) and holds a Series 7 securities license. Mr. Carlson is a current member of the Board of Trustees of INREIT, a real estate investment trust based in Minot, ND. He is a member and past president (2003-2004) of the Fargo Rotary. He has broad experience serving on various nonprofit boards and, among numerous others, currently serves as VP-Administration for the Northern Lights Council of the Boy Scouts of America.

Michael Johnson Michael Johnson, RN, Vice President/Chief Nursing Officer,sets the direction for resident services in all of Edgewood’s communities and is responsible for quality improvement, risk management and licensing functions for the company. He has also served as the Regional II Vice President/COO for the company, and prior to that he served as the Director of Nursing for Edgewood Vista in Brainerd. Michael, who is also a Registered Nurse, has 20 years of experience in critical care and medical/surgical nursing in an acute care setting. He also volunteers for an international aid organization providing surgical services to people in Guatemala.

Gene Hysjulien Gene Hysjulien, Vice President – Region I,directly oversees operations at the five Edgewood Vista senior living communities and three Edgewood Village senior living neighborhoods in Bismarck, Minot and Fargo, N.D., and Spearfish, S.D. Prior to this, he served as EMG’s President/Chief Executive Officer, a position he held since 2006. Gene earned his undergraduate degree in Psychology from Minot State University and his Master’s in Social Service Administration with a dual focus in clinical and administrative from the University of Minnesota. With more than 37 years of healthcare experience, he has held administrative positions in both public and private industry. Prior to joining EMG, he served as the North Dakota Director of Disability Services.

Ross Huttunen, Vice President – Region II,directly oversees Edgewood’s senior living communities in Minnesota. These include Edgewood Vista of Brainerd, East Grand Forks, Hermantown, Virginia and Clearwater Suites of Alexandria. Prior to this, Huttunen served as the Operations Executive for HealthEast Care System in St. Paul, Minn., a position he held since 2000. Huttunen comes to Edgewood with over twenty years of operations, strategic planning and leadership experience in acute care hospitals, memory care and long-term care. He holds his bachelor’s degree in biology from Moorhead State University, a master’s degree in healthcare administration from Kennedy-Western University and a master’s degree in business administration from the University of St. Thomas. Originally from Makinen, Minn., Huttunen and his family now make their home in Ham Lake, Minn.

Sylvia O'Neal Sylvia O’Neal, Vice President – Region III, directly oversees operations at 11 Edgewood Vista memory care communities, including Edgewood Vista Columbus, Fremont, Grand Island, Hastings, Norfolk and Omaha, Neb.; Belgrade, Billings, Kalispell and Missoula, Mont.; and Sioux Falls, S.D. O’Neal earned her undergraduate degree from William Carey College and her Master of Science degree in community counseling from the University of Southern Mississippi. O’Neal has more than 35 years of experience in various administrative positions in the fields of mental health, pastoral care and social services in both hospital and community settings. O’Neal has also served as the Administrator of Edgewood Vista in Kalispell and as an Operational Consultant for EMG.

David J. Lovato David J. Lovato, Vice President – Region IV, directly oversees Edgewood’s five senior living communities in Wyoming. These include: Park Place and Meadow Wind Assisted Living in Casper, Sierra Hills and Aspen Wind Assisted Living in Cheyenne and Spring Wind Assisted Living in Laramie. Prior to this, Lovato served as the Executive Director for Aspen Wind Assisted Living, a position he held since 2004. Lovato is a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) and is currently completing his Bachelor of Science degree in healthcare management from Bellevue University. Since 2004, he has been a Support Group Facilitator for Alzheimer’s Association. In addition Lovato served as a Med Tech and Admin troop in the Wyoming Air National Guard for seven years and was involved in missions to provide humanitarian medical aid in Mocoron, Honduras and Chiclayo, Peru.

Mike Sharp Mike Sharp, Vice President – Region V, directly oversees Edgewood’s senior living communities in Idaho. Sharp has over 20 years of experience in senior health care finance and management. He began his career in accounting and finance with skilled nursing facilities in Idaho. He then served as an Administrator for a 120 bed nursing facility in Boise for three years. He spent the next 12 years in multi-facility management as Director of Operations for Kindred Healthcare; Regional Vice President for Life Care Centers of America; Chief Operating Officer for Regal Senior Living, providing management and finance consulting for Assisted Living Facilities; and Division Director of Operations Support for Sunbridge Healthcare. He also served on the Idaho Health Care Association Board for 10 years and was President for two years. He is from Meridian, Idaho and received a Bachelor’s Degree in Business, Major in Accounting from the University of Idaho.

Ron Whetter Ron Whetter, Vice President of Finance and Budget,brought more than 22 years of healthcare finance experience to EMG when he joined the company in 2003 as the Finance and Budget Director. Prior to this, he served as a Healthcare Consultant for a large regional healthcare accounting firm. Ron holds his Bachelor of Science degree in accounting from the University of North Dakota. EMG’s Accounting and Finance Department is responsible for all accounts payable and receivable; tax filing; payroll management; financial statement generation; budget preparation and oversight; risk mitigation; cost management; national purchasing; contract management; budgeting and cash management.

Sheila Beesley, RN, Quality Assurance Nurse, graduated from Boise State University with a degree in Nursing and is pursuing a Master’s Degree of Nursing from Idaho State University.  She has been a Professional Registered Nurse for more than 16 years and began her career at St. Luke’s Regional Medical Center on the surgical unit and in the staffing unit; which gained her valuable experience working in nearly all areas of the hospital setting.  Her most recent career path was working for the College of Western Idaho as a Program Director/Start-up Coordinator for their Registered Medical Assisting Program, Certified Nursing Assistant Program, Pharmacy Technician Program and the Idaho State Board of Nursing; Assistance with Medication Program. She has specialized in Geriatric Nursing for the past 10 years; working in Assisted Living and Dementia Care agencies.

Christy Berger Christy Berger, Human Resource Generalist, provides HR consulting at Edgewood in areas of risk management, staffing, training and workplace safety. She joined Edgewood in March 2011, after serving as an HR manager and business analyst for a global semiconductor company and a mid-west customer service call center.

Hollie Davis, Quality Assurance Administrative Assistant, is responsible for creating and maintaining varied documents, reports, and tools used to track and trend vital quality assurance information.  Hollie also helps the Quality Assurance nurses in creating, editing, and distributing QA policies, procedures, manuals, and training materials; handles new and renewal state licensing for all EMG properties; receives, tracks, and reports all Resident Incident reports and coordinates with liability insurers and attorneys to ensure proper handling of resident incidents; coordinates travel arrangements, schedules, meetings, and training for the QA department.  Hollie was born and raised in Pennsylvania and is new to the Grand Forks, North Dakota area.  Prior to joining EMG she was the District Office Manager for a United States Congresswoman and a Legislative Aide to a Pennsylvania State Representative. Hollie has a Bachelor of Arts degree in Criminal Justice and Political Science from Edinboro University of Pennsylvania.

Keith Jensen Keith Jensen, Construction/Environmental Services Director,has more than 20 years of experience in management. He has his Bachelor of Business Administration degree with an emphasis in management from the University of North Dakota. Prior to joining EMG, Keith served as Project Manager for EDG, overseeing regional residential property development. EMG’s Environmental & Construction Management Department is responsible for facility physical plant equipment; systems maintenance; audits and safety reviews; preparing recommendation reports that drive capital budget planning; providing support to the purchasing function through negotiation; consulting for equipment and system repairs; consultation and recommendation on new construction and development projects.

Barb Kramer Barb Kramer, RN, Quality Assurance Nurse,has her Bachelor of Science degree in nursing from the University of North Dakota and her Master’s degree in business management from the University of Mary. Barb began her nursing career as a Surgical Critical Care Unit (SCCU) nurse at United/ Altru Hospital in Grand Forks. Prior to joining EMG, she served as the Care Management Coordinator at Altru Health System. EMG’s Quality Assurance Department is responsible for implementing policies, procedures, practices and service standards; performing reviews and quality services checks; maintaining regulatory compliance on state, local and federal levels; training and retaining quality nursing staff; developing and maintaining accurate service level assessment processes; conducting family and resident Satisfaction Surveys and serving as a liaison between licensing agencies and local facility management.

Amy Larson Ward Amy Larson Ward, Human Resource Generalist,has her Bachelor of Business Administration degree with an emphasis in human resources from the University of North Dakota. Melanie Metz Melanie Metz, RD, Dining and Nutrition Services Director, is a Licensed, Registered Dietitian with more than 20 years of experience in clinical nutrition services, consulting, public health, worksite wellness and food service management. Melanie has her Bachelor of Science degree in nutrition from the University of North Dakota.
EMG’s Dining Services Department is responsible for developing dining services experience strategies; designing menus to meet residents’ needs; nutritional analysis; food cost analysis; managing national purchasing and contracts; administering nutrition software and training facility dining service managers and staff members.

Joel Nett Joel Nett, IT Director, is responsible for monitoring and maintaining all of the computer and telecom systems at Edgewood, as well as planning for future growth. Prior to coming to Edgewood, Joel worked as a System Engineer for Walgreens Health and Wellness division for three and a half years.

Shannon Obregon Shannon Obregon, Accounting Supervisor,oversees and supervises the accounting, accounts payable, accounts receivable and payroll for Edgewood Management Group and its communities. Obregon has been with Edgewood since 2004 and received her degree in Accounting from Northland Community and Technical College – East Grand Forks. Prior to joining EMG she was the Business Office Manger and Store Manager for a local business.

Hatti Olson Hatti Olson, Executive Assistant, is responsible for coordinating travel arrangements, meetings and tracking information. Some of the forms she receives are injury reporting, open positions, declining budgets, driver’s license expiration, and short term stay/daycare service details. Prior to this position, she was a Central Processing Supervisor for six and half years at Altru Health System, overseeing a staff of 30 people. Hatti has a COTA degree from the Northland Technical College.

Jenni Peterson Jenni Hoffmann, Marketing Director, is responsible for developing Edgewood marketing strategies; community marketing plans; developing collateral and publications; implementing advertising and public relations tactics; tracking move-ins and move-outs; conducting sales/relationship training; monitoring “You’ve got Leads” reports and property websites. Prior to this position she served as an Admissions Counselor at Northland Community and Technical College and GMAC as an acquisition analyst and sales representative. Jenni has a Bachelor degree in mass communication and a minor in real estate from St. Cloud State University, and a Master’s degree from Augsburg College.

Alan Silletto Alan Silletto, Finance and Budget Manager, joined Edgewood in 1999 as an Accounting Clerk while attending the University of North Dakota. After completing his Bachelor of Science Degree in Business Administration, Financial Management in 2004, he began working full time for Edgewood. Since then, he has held positions in technology, financial analysis and budgeting, and construction cost accounting for Edgewood Management Group and Edgewood Development Group.

Carol Wurdeman, RN, Quality Assurance Nurse, received her license from Bryan School of Nursing in Lincoln, Nebraska.  Carol began her nursing career as a med surgical nurse at Bryan Memorial Hospital in Lincoln, Nebraska in 1991 but shortly after started her career in Long Term Nursing and has done a variety of management positions in long term care.  She joined Edgewood Vista in 2008 as the Executive Director at their Columbus, Nebraska location and joined the Quality Assurance team in the spring of 2011 and is the QA nurse for Nebraska, Wyoming and South Dakota.  EMG’s Quality Assurance Department is responsible for implementing policies, procedures, practices and service standards; performing reviews and quality services checks; maintaining regulatory compliance on state, local and federal levels; training and retaining quality nursing staff; developing and maintaining accurate service level assessment processes; conducting family and resident Satisfaction Surveys and serving as a liaison between licensing agencies and local facility management.
